This week, the most popular Korean dramas on Netflix are all dramas set in Korea, with dramas set for release next year in China, the United States, and Japan.
Some of the most-watched dramas are from Korean studios, including Yoo Jae Suk’s Yoo Ji Sung, Lee Kwang Soo’s Blue Exorcist, and Park Chan Wook’s Kwon Ji Ae.
(If you’re unfamiliar with the genre, the name Kwon Ji Ae is Korean for “love”).
But there are plenty of dramas that have been released elsewhere, too, including Korean classics like the new season of The King of Fighters, a series of action-adventure dramas about a group of fighters.
All of this means that it’s tempting to skip a lot of these shows in favor of something like the popular Korean romance drama series Girls und Panzer.
“I want to see more of the K-pop culture and K-drama that is happening in Korea,” says Lee, who has also made an appearance on the series as a character designer.
“But I don’t want to be trapped in Korean dramas.
I’m not going to watch Korean dramas because I’m bored by them.
It’s so easy to forget that.”
